Cool Tools (1)
It's only when something is not here anymore, that you realize how much you need it. While reinstalling my new notebook (thanks to Dell Gold Support), I'm quickly reinstalling a whole bunch of super handy (and most of them free) tools that I've used and loved for years:

* Brian Apps Sizer 3.3 (free): use pre-defined screen resolutions (or define your own) to resize any window, including fixed size windows, and/or reposition them on the screen. A must-have for any admin or web designer.

* Brian Apps Hot Key Plus 1.0 (free): define your own list of shortcuts, and finally use the Win-key on your keyboard fully!

* Sysinternals Process Explorer (free): the ultimate replacement for your task manager! This utility is loaded with essential functionality, every administrator should use it.

* Sysinternals Autoruns (free): very handy utility to view all places in registry where spyware, adware and viruses can hide.

That's it... I'll add a new post with more of these goodies soon. Until then, you know what to do!

(Not so) IntelliPoint
I hate this. Every few minutes I get a popup from Microsoft IntelliPoint saying this:

---------------------------
Microsoft IntelliPoint
---------------------------
The wireless mouse battery level is low. Replace the batteries soon so the wireless mouse will continue to function properly.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

The message would be great when it was true, however for some strange reason my wireless desktop set has decided to stalk me with these false messages. I've seen this before at other places...it seems related to bad reception. However, the receiver is only centimeters away from the mouse and keyboard, it's almost impossible to have signal reception problems. I notice that a lot of keystrokes get repeated or coming way too late, so there is a problem. The set has been working great for months, now all of a sudden this is happening.
If someone knows a good resolution to this, let me know!

Anyway...did you notice the ascii representation of the dialog box? This is something I just discovered through a posting somewhere about how great intellipoint is (not)...whenever you have a dialog box in front of you that you want to copy, press Control-C. It is copied to the clipboard as plain text!

Update: uninstalling IntelliPoint gets rid of the error message, until someone has a better solution.

Virtual Places
What a great ASP.NET Atlas demo! This Web 2.0 application couples Virtual Earth with other services, on an interactive map. So far, nothing special you think...until you type your own address, see the map move to it and then to find out bloggers and website near your place. In my case, this includes a weather station only 700 meters from my front door. Since this demo, I've updated this blog with some geotags, so you'll be able to find it on the map too (try "wingene, belgium").
