- FIX: Firefox Slow Response for Localhost on Vista & XP
-
Posted by oVan on Thursday, August 30, 2007 | PermaLink | 4 commentsWhen developing on Vista (or XP with IPv6) you'll notice that Firefox is extremely slow on localhost-sites.
Here's a fix, courtesy of Dan Wahlin's Weblog, via ScottGu's blog.
In Firefox, type about:config and then in the filter box type dns. You'll see an entry named network.dns.disableIPv6...
Double-click that line so that it reads True, effectively disabling IPv6.
- Test your website on all browsers for free!

Posted by oVan on Monday, June 11, 2007 | PermaLink | 1 commentsThis is an excellent tip for developers who want to test their website on all major browsers and platforms, without having to buy a Mac, Windows and Linux pc at the same time.
On browsershots.org you can get a screenshot of your website from a whole list of available browsers. It does take a while before you get all screenshots (from 15 minutes to a few hours sometimes), probably due to its large success so far. However, since this is a free service, there's no need to complain I suppose.
Here are some screenshot from browsershots.org that shows this very blog as it is displayed in Opera 9.20 on Linux and Firefox 2.0.0.4 also on Linux:
When you click on the image of the Opera screenshot, you'll see a close-up like this:
And finally when you click again, you'll get a 1:1 view on the screenshot, so you can examine every pixel of your layout.
If you need a faster solution, you can try BrowserCam which has affordable prices and gives you near instant results and much more options.Labels: Apple, browser, Firefox, free, Internet Explorer, linux, Opera, screen capture, Web Designer, web develoment
- Quickly Change Tabs
-
Posted by oVan on Thursday, May 10, 2007 | PermaLink | 0 commentsFor all keyboard lovers out there, here's a quick tip on changing the tabs in your browser: you all know that you can create a new tab with Ctrl-T, and that you can jump between the tabs with Ctrl-Tab...
But did you know that you can quickly focus a specific tab with Ctrl and the position of the tab? So for the first tab you type Ctrl-1, for the second one Ctrl-2, and so on.
This works in Internet Explorer 7 and FireFox 2. Maybe other browsers (Opera, Safari, ...) work too, so if you can test and verify this, let us know via the comments.Labels: Firefox, IE7, Internet Explorer 7, keyboard, shortcut
- Microsoft Silverlight, not there yet!
-
Posted by oVan on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 | PermaLink | 0 commentsYou've probably read about Microsoft Silverlight by now, the new and fancy name for WPF/E that runs on both Windows and Mac, and on Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera.
The trouble is that their website will only showcase it's own Silverlight techniques on April 30. If you want to give it a test-run yourself, you're stuck with the old February CTP. This leaves me with an unfinished impression that will not, eeuh, impress potential developers and companies yet.
Maybe you want to download some Silverlight goodies while you're waiting on Microsoft to finish up? Perhaps a nice widescreen wallpaper, "Silverlight Dawn" or "Silverlight Dusk"? Too bad they offer very strange resolutions — anyone heard of 1400x864 or 1600x800 (which turns out to be 1600x1050 instead of the industry standard 1680x1050). I guess it's time for a better wallpaper from Ultimate Vistas!Labels: download, Expression, Firefox, free, IE, Mac, Microsoft, Opera, Silverlight, wallpaper, Windows, WPF, WPF/E
